T9-1-1 is a free service available to you if you are part of the Deaf, Deafened, Hard of Hearing, or Speech Impaired (DHHSI) community. The service allows you to communicate with 911 call centres by text message (SMS) instead of by voice.
Registering for the T9-1-1 service:
For steps on how to register, visit Cogeco’s Accessibility services page.
Using the T9-1-1 service:
- Unlock your phone, since some phones block texts when locked.
- Dial 9-1-1 and press Call to start the emergency voice call.
- Wait for a text reply from the 9-1-1 centre (it’ll show a 13-digit number starting with 555911).
- Reply by text with your emergency details (keep it short and clear).
- Keep the voice call connected if possible. This lets the 9-1-1 call taker hear background noise, which may be helpful.
- If you don’t get a reply, resend your message.
- When it’s over, you’ll get a message saying “End of 9-1-1 Call.”
- Need more help after the call has ended? Dial 9-1-1 again to start a new session.
