Wireless Internet speeds can be impacted by a variety of factors. Below are some common causes for slower speeds, as well as suggestions on what to do to try to overcome the issue:

Your cable connections are loose

Many connection issues can be resolved by ensuring your cable connections are secure on both ends.

Your modem may need to be reset

To reset your modem, insert a straightened paperclip into the “reset” or “reboot” hole located on the back of the modem. Hold the paperclip in for 3 seconds, then release. The modem will try to resynchronize with the Cogeco network, which can take up to 2 minutes.

Note: See here for resetting a fibre optic gateway.

Your connection is being distributed among too many devices

The speed of your connection gets distributed among all the Internet-enabled devices in your home or business (computers, smart TVs, phones, tablets, game consoles, etc.). Try connecting fewer devices to your wireless network at the same time.

You’re doing too many things online at once

Your speed varies depending on the number of apps running, as well as the number of things you’re doing online simultaneously. Try doing less online simultaneously.

The device you’re using is having performance issues

The type and age of your devices can slow down the speed of your connection. Try using a newer or different device.

There are physical things getting in the way of a fast connection

Walls, doors, brick, winterized windows, concrete, and metals can all have negative impacts on the speed and quality of your connection. You may not be able to move your wall, but you can try moving your modem to a more centralized location to help improve your Internet experience.
