Why do I no longer see the 2.4 and 5 GHz names of my network with Wi-Fi Pods?

The Cogeco Wi-Fi Pods choose between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz for you. You can see only one name for your network to make sure you always have the best performance.

In general, modems have a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency for Wi-Fi:

  • The 2.4 GHz frequency provides wider coverage because it travels easily through walls; however, the speed is lower.
  • The 5 GHz frequency provides a shorter range with a higher speed and less interference as compared to the 2.4 GHz network.

Older equipment generally uses the 2.4 GHz frequency. The 5 GHz frequency is better for newer devices that frequently stream videos for high-bandwidth Internet activities. If your device is only compatible with 2.4 GHz it will connect to that band automatically.
