If the name of your wireless network doesn’t appear on your list of available networks, there are 2 things to do initially:
- Check that you’re looking for the correct network name—otherwise known as your Service Set Identifier (SSID). To verify your network name, see here for more information on managing your network.
- Check if your network can be detected by another Wi-Fi-enabled device. If another device can detect your network, it means there’s likely a problem with the device you were using previously. To fix the problem, you should consult the manufacturer of this device for troubleshooting.
Once you’re sure that you know your network name and the issue is not with the device you’re trying to connect, there are several things you can try to resolve the issue, based on what the cause of the issue may be. Below are some common causes, along with what to try to overcome the issue:
Your Wi-Fi device is too far from your router or Wi-Fi access point
Since Wi-Fi networks have a limited range, bring your computer closer to your Wi-Fi modem. If this isn't possible, you might need a Wi-Fi extender.
Your Wi-Fi modem is turned off or isn’t working properly
Make sure your Wi-Fi modem is plugged into an active outlet (power bar switched on, if applicable). If it is plugged in but none of the lights are lighting up on the modem, contact technical support (see Residential or Business contacts).
The Wi-Fi signal is weakened by appliances or other equipment causing interference
Certain appliances or equipment can cause interference in your Wi-Fi network. For example, microwaves and wireless phones may be using the same frequencies as your wireless network. If you think this might be the case, try changing the channel on your Wi-Fi modem (see video below).
Note: If you are using Cogeco Wi-Fi Pods, the optimal channel is selected automatically and cannot be changed.
The configuration of your Wi-Fi modem may have been modified since the original installation, and your network may not be configured to display its name (SSID)
Try connecting to your Wi-Fi network manually. Most devices have the option of manually entering an SSID that is not on the list of visible networks (look for an option such as "Other").
If your network name still isn’t appearing after taking the steps above, try resetting your modem.
