What is the Sense feature and how do I use it?

Sense uses Wi-Fi Pods and the Wi-Fi-connected devices in your home to detect motion by sensing disturbances in the signal between devices. This can then be used to give you a live view of motion in your home, a history of movement up to 7 days, and send you push notifications when motion takes place.

Enabling Sense

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Sense icon.
  2. Select Motion detection (iOS) or Turn on motion detection (Android) to enable the feature.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the desired level of detection.
  4. If you haven't already, assign stationary devices to the room where they are set up. This will allow Sense to tell you where in your home the motion is detected.
    • This can be done directly from the Sense page by tapping Sense devices, or through the device settings (for more information, refer to our article on Specific Devices).

Good to know:

  • Not all devices in the Sense Devices list will be used for motion detection since only 3 devices per Pod can be used to detect motion at a time.
  • Devices currently being used for motion detection are updated every 10 minutes by the cloud to ensure the best results.
  • Generally, portable devices like phones and smartwatches are not selected for motion detection as they frequently move, making motion detection unreliable.

Push Notifications

If desired, the app can send you Push Notifications whenever motion is detected in your home by selecting the Sense alerts option. It is strongly recommended that if you enable this feature you also enable Smart Activation in the Sense settings and assign each person a Primary Device that they will likely keep with them when the leave the home. This way the app will know when anyone with a profile comes home and automatically turn off the alerts until everyone leaves. For more information on setting up Primary Devices, refer to our article on People Profiles.

Sense Alert Accuracy

If you are receiving inaccurate Sense alerts, consider the following:

  • If you have pets, make sure the Have pets at home? option is enabled.
  • Other movement in your home may also inadvertently trigger an alert, such as an oscillating fan, robotic vacuum, or curtains moving in a breeze. If you are receiving such alerts, try adjusting the Motion Sensitivity to Low or Medium.
  • Motion Detection Devices and Pods should be placed towards the center of your home, instead of on the outside walls. If the sensitivity is too high and your devices are too close to the outside walls, motion happening outside, like someone dropping off a package, may trigger an event.
